We will be back again
The painted Hills cottage is one of our favorite getaways in Oregon! Beautiful, setting in lush garden, and central Oregon’s painted Hills! What more could you want?

Quirky colorful Lodgings
These cottages seem appropriately situated among the Painted Hills. Our cottage was comfortable and had the amenities we needed. Lots of artistic touches including art supplies for kids. Garden was eclectic and comfortable except for the usual bugs. Well located within the Fossil Beds National Monument. Very limited local resources so be prepared to bring your own groceries and fuel up in Prineville or John Day. Pet friendly. Neighborhood not really walkable but has lovely view. Kitchen was reasonably stocked with basics.

The mighty garden
So many things we enjoyed about the cottage and the town of Mitchell, but number one would have to be the garden, where we spent hours—grilling, exploring, delighting, enjoying morning tea/coffee and evening wine. Loved the recommendations: a swimming hole, an old road for strolling with dogs, the Kam Wah Chung museum, all 3 units of the John day fossil beds. Kids loved the video selection and the game room. A lovely, restful, family-friendly place!

A fun, fresh and relaxing place to stay while enjoying the beauty of the John day monument
The painted hills cottage was a very nice place to stay while exploring the John Day monument. It looked even better than on the pictures. The host provided us with some great places to add to our adventure. We especially enjoyed the priest hole swimming area. Thank you.

Beautiful Place!
Just like the photos show, the cottage is surrounded with a wonderful garden full of flowers and birds. We enjoyed watching mom robin come and go from the front porch and the place is one of the quietest places we have ever stayed. The cottage is filled with light and art and well equipped for cooking, reading and watching movies. Owner Barbara and her dog Ella were very welcoming and a treat to talk with. One small drawback, because of trees and a nearby street light, the grounds aren’t great for stargazing, but Barbara told us of a great spot nearby. And, last but not least, the gorgeous Painted Hills are an easy seven mile drive. This is the only place we’d stay in Mitchell.

My mother and I have created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals in 2009 with the two cottages we've used for years as our own vacation place when our family lived in Seattle. Once we've bought our 33 acre ranch located at the John Day River and 9 miles from the Painted Hills, the business idea for the vacation rentals was born out of the fact that there is very little accommodation available in this area inspire of the fact that so many visitors come to see and experience the amazing landscapes. A 3rd cottage was added just recently , a spacious 3 bedroom house which is conveniently located right across the street from the other 2 properties. A great addition and wonderful place to accommodate up to 16 guests.
This region is so rich with natural wonder and breathtaking vistas as well as the 3 units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monuments that we are happy that we can provide a special place for the travelers passing through.

Why they chose this property

After many trips and longer journeys through various States, we have fallen in love with the unique diverse area of Eastern Oregon. We've bought the two side by side properties in1997 and have remodeled the two houses as well as created a beautiful garden over the next 10 years. 3 years ago we've purchased a 3rd cottage, the Sunset Cottage which is located just across from the street of the other 2 properties. We've remodeled the old garage building to a small art studio that can be used as a workshop place, gallery or a meditation space. These 3 properties with their beautiful gardens and location above Mitchell on a rim, have become a true oasis in the desert that has brought an abundance of beautiful memories to many people - family members and guests alike.

What makes this property unique

The Painted Hills Vacation Rentals has 3 cottages located in a quite neighborhood of Mitchell. They can be rented together for a family reunion, bigger event, a special interest group or workshops. All of our 3 cottages are listed with homeway.com and vrbo.com. The cottages are only 9 miles away from the famous Painted Hills one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. Both other units of the John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno and Sheep Rock, are easily reached by car on the Journey through Time scenic byway route. Smith Rock - another one of the 7 wonders of Oregon - is only 1.5 hours away by car. There is an abundance of unique hiking and biking opportunities, wildlife observation, and star gazing in the vast and open night skies that makes this place very special for any adventurous outdoor lover. For us this business is more then just a way of income - we truly love to host people and share this special area with them. Working in the gardens, remodeling the cottages, and creating this special magic for our guests is part of our daily life and our joy. Many of our guests have come as strangers and left as friends, returning for many more visits and bringing their families and friends. We love this life, our unique region and hope to welcome you here soon!
