Moose Haven Cabin @ 22 West

We are adjacent to Routt National Forest and the Zirkel Wilderness.  Many species of wildlife call this home, moose, deer, elk, pronghorn, wolf, coyote, fox, raccoon, bobcat and many species of bird share this land so please keep your furry companions close.

The location is ideal for getting off the grid and enjoying private trails for hiking, biking, xc ski and snowshoe. 4WD or AWD preferred travel in winter. The location is remote and beautiful. The Moose Haven is at about 9000 feet along the Park Range in the Rocky Mountains. The heat is furnished by a wood stove that does require stoking through cold nights. The composting bathroom is 20 feet away and the shower house a short walk. Water is supplied as the Moose Haven is a dry cabin. The remoteness, views, ability to have pets make this spot special. There is lots of Timothy Grass for horses, llamas or alpacas. Hiking, biking, xc ski or snowshoe opportunities right from your cabin to our Elk Run Trail or into Routt National Forest and the Mount Zirkel Wilderness makes this destination hard to beat.Downstairs is a full and twin bed and a queen fold out sofa bed upstairs. There isn't running water in the cabin however well water is provided. We provide a Blackstone grill for cooking in lieu of the fire pit. There is a fire pit with a grill for cooking at the front door when no fire ban exists,Solar powers the lights and phone. We also supply the following: blankets, linens, pillows, silverware, cooking utensils, pots and pans, French Press, glasses, cups, water, firewood for heating the cabin, matches, outside chairs, picnic table and a fire-ring with grill. The composting bathroom is 20 feet from the cabin. The shared shower house is a short walk from the cabin. Our Elk Run Trail is a great hiking or biking trail in the summer and xc ski and snowshoe in the winter. Routt National Forest and Mount Zirkel Wilderness is a short hike or ride. There are over 60 trails and 70 lakes in the Zirkel Wilderness. You will be within 100 yards of the cabin from where you park. Snowshoes and a sled come in handy as the snow gets deep. In the summer check out our trail dubbed "Narnia" which takes you to where two waterfalls merge on the Roaring Ditch which runs about the end of May until about the first week of July. The trail is marked with Monarch Butterflies. We offer sledding, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter on packed trails. Buffalo Pass is a beautiful late summer drive into Steamboat Springs.Deb, Eli and Pat are always available as the wildlife rehabilitation facility is near. If you need advice about a trail or fishing or about the wildlife just let us know. You step out of your door and you are "there". You will love the remoteness and the views. Wildlife abound. Moose, elk, deer, pronghorn, bear, fox, marmot, raccoon, squirrel and many species of bird from the hummingbirds of summer to the rosy finches of winter.Check for wildlife before letting your dog outside. Thank-you for respecting the creatures here. The cabin is nestled against the Park Range. Please consider mountain conditions in the winter. Snowy Magic at Moose Haven A-Frame
Thank you, Deb, for a wonderful weekend at Moose Haven! The Snow was beautiful (even for native Coloradoans!) and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. The kids slept upstairs on the fold-out couch (we brought our down, camping sleeping bags for them). Saturday the sun came out, and our family built snow forts, went snow shoeing, read books, and played cards before settling in for a hearty soup warmed atop the wood-burning stove. The out house situation was surprisingly very nice and clean! We will be back! —Andrea, Jason, & Kiddos

Amazing 2 nights
The only thing better than the cabin and views were the hosts. They are truly amazing and do everything possible to make the stay perfect.

Unhelpful / poor communicating host
Host is very unwilling to help unfortunate travel plans in any sort of way. Chose to pocket money rather than help, even though we hadn’t received any communication in 12 months.

Awesome Getaway
This is my second time at the Moose Cabin and there will likely be a third. The atmosphere, privacy and genuine care of the hostess is above and beyond. The views are amazing and the overall atmosphere of the cabin is so homey.

About the host

Hosted by Deb McLachlan

Host profile image
We are 22 West. Eli and Pat are 6th generation and Deb is 5th from a long line of Irish immigrants and brave, stubborn, hard working ranchers. Our land was generously gifted from the kindest, hardest little working woman, Sarah Iris Irvine, whose desire was to keep this land in our family at a huge sacrifice to her.
Our rentals also help to support North Park Wildlife Rehabilitation. We care for injured and orphaned wildlife in Jackson, Routt and Grand counties.

Why they chose this property

22 West is located 18 miles southwest of Walden, CO along the Park Range, Routt National Forest and the Zirkel Wilderness. Deb and her mom Sarah Iris were both born here in the old homestead which can be seen from the cabin. This is home, where our roots run deep.

What makes this property unique

We manage 130 acres of pristine, mountainous, property all within a short distance of many recreational opportunities. We offer remote, secluded, comfy cabins with a shower house.
