About this property

Private Apt. in Historic Home: Walk to Monuments, Museums & Convention Center.

Great location—this hidden gem in the center of Northwest Washington, D.C. is ten minutes by taxi from Ronald Reagan National Airport and five minutes from Union Station. Situated several blocks from the D.C. Convention Center, you can walk to Metro (subway station—yellow, green and silver lines), the White House, the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, Logan Circle and a legion of world class restaurants. You can also walk to Chinatown, City Center, Downtown, Penn Quarter, Whole Foods and 14th Street nightlife. Explore, rest, rejuvenate, relax!

Originally the kitchen of a large Victorian home built in the 1860s, this elegant, unique English basement apartment has seen a lot of history here in the Nation's Capital, and its current incarnation is versatile, sleek and compact with sunny front windows that receive lots of morning light.

The unit is equipped with cable, WiFi, a 43" smart TV, a Bose stereo and a full-size washer/dryer. A peaceful, private, walled garden with three water features in the rear and a small gas-powered wood stove in the living room further enhance the unit's unique charm. A four-top table converts to seat six, and four extra folding chairs are stored in the coat closet. In addition to the queen-size bed in the bedroom, the sofa converts to a full size bed that sleeps two.

If you prefer to dine at home, you have everything you need to cook and serve a seated dinner for six. In the kitchen you’ll find coffee, tea, creamer, sugar, spices, oil and vinegar. Dish and laundry soap are provided, as are shampoo, conditioner, soap, a blow-dryer and clean towels. Bed linens are provided. Inquire about additional maid service if you need it. There’s a grocery store, a convenience store, and a liquor store within a block, and up 14th Street there’s a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's.

There is street parking only, and on request a residential parking permit is provided at no charge. The permit’s allows parking in the restricted areas around the home. You will need to provide your vehicle's plate number, state, make and color in advance of your arrival when requesting the pass.

There is a Capital Bikeshare across the street and scooter, Smart Car and Segway rental locations nearby.

The owner, Tom, lives on site and is available to provide help and answer additional questions during your stay. Welcome!

DC vacation to see the sites.
The basement apartment was fully functional for our stay. Separate entry, clean, full kitchen, nice bathroom and the bed was comfortable (not worn out). The three ring binder with information related to the apartment and to the DC area was very helpful. I texted Tom a couple times with questions about DC. He replied promptly with helpful information. We didn’t venture out at night but we felt safe walking in and around the area. We had no issues with our stay.

Perfection!
Tom was an excellent host! He made sure I had a parking pass and knew exactly where to park and made sure to emphasize moving my vehicle while I was there. We were able to use the Metro the whole week and it was a short walk to the closest station. We walked to the Whitehouse for our tour too! I loved walking the neighborhood in the evening and Logan Circle is close and a must see! Thank you again Tom for letting us stay!

Perfect place to do a tour of DC
This was such a great place to stay for our tour of DC. The property was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. There were many restaurants, a few Michelin rated and just a short ride away they were started. There were grocery stores and liquor stores within walking distance. It was about a mile walk to the National Mall or you could take the Metro just a short walk down the street. Tom the host was available to answer any questions. Overall this was just a great place!

I'm a 5th generation native Washingtonian, with over thirty years of experience managing my own properties. I love to travel, read and dine in the numerous good restaurants in D.C. At home, I enjoy celebrating holidays, birthdays and special occasions with friends and family. I have a real sense of 'home' and have tried to incorporate that at toms bnb.

At my day job, I work as a hair colorist in a Georgetown salon. I've been a hairdresser for 36 years, and have served as hair stylist to many in the fields of politics, entertainment and media, including 25 foreign first ladies visiting the White House. Since 2002 I have worked mainly as a hair color specialist.

My travels: I've seen a lot of Europe and the U.S., a bit of Asia, Mexico, Scandinavia and the Caribbean. Most of my trips in recent years are self-guided culinary tours. I am an accomplished cook and have studied in-country, the cuisines of France, Thailand, Vietnam and India. I collect cook books, and after all I've learned, most of the dishes I like to cook are found in "The Joy of Cooking". You will find that book at toms bnb, along with a fairly well equipped kitchen.

I love to read historical novels, biographies, the memoirs of people I admire, and fiction. I enjoy attending writer's workshops, literary festivals and book events sponsored by the celebrated Politics and Prose book store here in D.C. I am working on a novel.

Why they chose this property

Washington, D.C. is my home town. The first time I looked at this house I fell in love with it and purchased it. Built just after the civil war in the 1860's, it typifies 19th century Victorian architecture and has its own unique history. It's a large and grand home with 12-foot ceilings, a fireplace in every room and many of the original features, such as heart-pine floors, pocket doors dividing the two parlors that comprise the main first floor rooms and 52 stairs leading to second and third floors. There are, of course, many things that still need to be fixed and restored, and upkeep is constant. The part of the home you will occupy during your stay was the original kitchen, at the basement level. I demolished and rebuilt it as a cozy, modern apartment that is independent of the rest of the house with its own entrances, kitchen, bath and washer/dryer.

At the time I bought the home, the neighborhood was marginalized by crime, poverty and prostitution--the legacy of the riots of 1968 after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After years of rebuilding, the area has become a destination for city living, shopping, dining and nightlife.

What makes this property unique

Among the unique benefits of this property are its location two blocks from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and its convenient proximity to many of the city's museums, sight-seeing, shopping and dining destinations. If you don't like to walk, there are bike rentals (a Capital Bikeshare rack is right across the street), Zipcars (hourly car rental, 800 feet away), and Uber and Lyft will quickly and easily take you anywhere you want to go in the city. The apartment is well equipped for making your own meals, there are many good restaurants within walking distance, and lots of restaurants will deliver a delicious hot meal right to your door.
