About this property

Tranquil 1-bd Guesthouse Apartment on Spanish Estate, sundeck w/ mountain views

Escape to tranquility in this light-filled, newly remodeled one-bedroom guesthouse apartment on a grand old half-acre Spanish estate. Centrally located in Pasadena with easy freeway access, enter another world as you step under the estate’s redwood, palm, and magnolia trees. Take the stairs to the apartment under a hundred-year-old olive tree. Enjoy the view from the sundeck, and dream away some hours on a hammock in the bamboo grove next to a fish pond, while listening to birds sing.
The 412 square foot apartment is in its own building, separate from the estate’s main house. It is up one flight of stairs on the top floor of a two storey building. A hundred-year-old olive tree provides shade and privacy and just steps from your door, you will have your own little bamboo mini-forest nook to yourself.

The living room extends out to a spacious sundeck with a view of the San Gabriel mountains. There is a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, oven, stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and sink. There is hi-speed wifi and a TV with over a dozen Spectrum TV channels including major networks, sports, kids, and audio music stations. The Roku stick also offers the additional option to stream your own Netflix, Hulu, Sling, or other subscriptions. A hairdryer, iron, and ironing board are provided, as well as basic toiletries. Laundry facilities are available upon request.
Please note: we have a strict NO SMOKING rule.

The apartment has one bedroom with a small attached bathroom with a walk-in shower. The bed has a brand new Serta plush queen size mattress to accommodate up to two guests. The living room sofa pulls out into a queen-sized bed that can accommodate two guests.

*We are located within walking distance of the end of the route for the famed Pasadena Rose Parade as well as the post-parade float viewing. The Rose Parade is held every January 1st (unless January 1st falls on a Sunday, in which case, the parade is on Monday, January 2nd). The float viewing is held immediately after the parade ends and into the following day.

We do provide off-street parking in our driveway to guests. The parking area is on our property, outside of our gates. Please note that it is a fairly narrow driveway suitable for average-sized cars but a tight squeeze for larger than average vehicles such as oversized trucks.

* We have a very friendly basset hound on the premises who loves to interact with guests.

While guests are welcome to explore the west side of the estate which has a forest-like setting with a secluded bamboo grove, a fish pond, and many trees and plants, the east side of the estate is reserved for host's personal use. However, should guests need anything, host is easily reachable by text or phone call.

Guests with young children should be aware that the 2-ft deep fish pond is not fenced. Additionally, host’s personal side of the estate includes an ungated pool.

Cozy little place in Pasadena
Very nice garage apartment with a European touch on a really nice Spanish Mission style residential property. Very local feel and in a quiet safe neighborhood. Complete with balcony w/ mountain View, wifi, tv, kitchenette, fold out couch and nice queen sized bedroom. Came with a bowl of welcome pastries and a platter full of homemade fruit jams in the fridge. Barely saw or heard our hosts. But they were very responsive when we had a question.

phenomenal spot!
I was in town for work and this was the perfect space for me! It was extremely comfortable and my only regret is that I didn't have a chance to use the back patio more since I was out all day. the leave what you don't use policy for the kitchen is amazing, because it meant that I had spices to use and oatmeal for breakfast. the pastries that were there to welcome me on arrival were also phenomenal! The only complaint I have is that Malabar didn't hang out with me enough! She's perfect!

Perfect place to stay when in Pasadena
A very peaceful place to stay. A small kitchen with everything you need to cook. A wonderful deck with morning sun. Coffee and pastries provided. The entire place impeccably clean. Friendly hosts and Bassett hound. This is the best place we have stayed.

About the host

We are a transplanted French family (Hervé arrived from France in the 1980s, Ailin from Sarawak, Borneo, by way of boarding school in Edinburgh, Scotland). We met in Los Angeles and raised two children between France and the U.S.

Why they chose this property

The estate was built in 1926 and belonged to the same family through several generations. When you enter the grounds gate, look up and you will see the majestic redwood/sequoia tree that was grown from a seedling by the original patriarch. In the late nineties, the children of the original owners had moved out and into their own homes. Their parents passed away, leaving the house empty for almost ten years. Eventually, the heirs decided to sell the property. Hervé and Ailin were planning to downsize after raising their two children. During their tours of potential homes in the LA area, they visited the estate, and saw past its neglected condition. They envisioned restoring the estate to its former glory. So on a wing and a prayer, they decided to abandon their original idea of downsizing and took on the challenge of re-constructing the estate. With roots in le Pays Basque (the Basque area in the south of France), they understood the uniquely Spanish-Mediterranean flavored architecture and sought to re-interpret the property with that in mind but with a modern attitude. Work on the estate began at the end of 2016. Restoring the estate has been painstaking but rewarding, and is still very much a work in progress. We hope that you will see what we did – the beauty and stateliness of a bygone era that makes us unable to help ourselves to do anything other than to slow down and to relax. La vie est belle! Life is beautiful! Enjoy!

What makes this property unique

When you enter the grounds gate, look up and you will see the majestic redwood/sequoia tree that was grown from a seedling by the original patriarch. Next to it sit a pair of imperious pine trees. As the tallest trees in the neighborhood, they conveniently provide a marker for locating the estate. You are welcome to wander around the west side grounds and you will see trees of all varieties: palm, jacaranda, magnolia, camellia, avocado, elm, oak…. and of course, the hundred-year-old olive tree next to the guesthouse. Spend an afternoon with a good book or take a nap in the hammock in the little shaded bamboo grove. There is also a water lily pond, a complete eco-system of its own, and a favorite spot for dragonflies. Raccoons were fond of grabbing the koi that used to live in the pond’s waters so they have been replaced with smaller goldfish. The grounds are home to many birds – you will hear their singing throughout the day and into the night; as well as to squirrels, raccoons, opossum, an occasional visiting (and harmless) bobcat, and rabbits.
Just around sunset every evening, you will hear the screeching of the famed flock of Pasadena parrots as they fly over the estate and settle for several minutes on a nearby tree. Look up and perhaps you will spot these lovely feral parrots that are mostly green with red crowns. Their story is that in 1969, a nearby pet store caught on fire and nearby residents opened the cages in an effort to save the birds. Since then, these highly social birds have been busy reproducing, and they have remained in this part of Pasadena where there are plenty of mature fruit trees and seeds.
Sit out on the guesthouse sun deck and enjoy the view of the San Gabriel mountains with your morning coffee. Time slows down here and you are reminded to enjoy every moment.
