About this property

Modern Mid Century Home + National Park Mountain Views + Shenandoah River

We invite you to stay in our completely remodeled home with all modern conveniences, including central AC, heat, & high speed WiFi. Our goal is to provide a superbly clean, safe, comfortable stay with access to a multitude of outdoor activities. Short walk to the River Outfitters for tubing, canoeing and kayaking. Public boat landing a block away. Comfortable driving distance to Luray Caverns, George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park. We are family friendly and love dogs.

The space

Hi! We travel often for work and usually stay in Airbnb rentals around the world. From these experiences, we bought and renovated this home as a full-time vacation rental with all the little details we expect (and are often missing in other places). Basically, we created our dream Airbnb vacation stay. It's modeled on an Alpine cabin that we visited in Norway.

We are Airbnb SuperHosts and hope you'll read through our 5-star reviews to be confident in your booking. The Shenandoah Valley is our home and we love to share the undiscovered pleasures of the area. We have mountain ranges on either side of the valley with a gorgeous river running through it.

Our nightly price includes all local taxes, and accommodation of up to six guests. Kids are always welcome, and we're pet friendly (with prior approval). Just let us know who you're bringing.

If interested, check out our other listing in the area if your looking for a Farmhouse:

House:
We have lovingly renovated this house and turned it into a modern home with a European style. The house is located on a small hill near the Shenandoah river with gorgeous views of the National Park. You'll wake up to the sunrise, then watch the sun slowly fall on the mountains as night comes. Though we are on a small road that follows the river, you'll feel secluded because there are no visible neighbors.

We've updated the home with all conveniences, including central AC, heat and high speed WiFi. This is not a rustic cabin, but some seriously awesome luxury. A great way to enjoy the outdoors. If you have any special needs, just ask. We live just ten minutes away.

Parking:
The home is on a small hill with a concrete driveway that will allow you to drive right up to the front door. Two cars can park up top. One car can park at the bottom of the driveway.

Bedrooms:
The house sleeps up to six people, but also perfect for a couple who want a quiet getaway.

There are two private bedrooms. The master suite has a Restoration Hardware king size bed and flat screen TV. The second bedroom has a West Elm Queen Bed and also has a flat screen TV.

There's also two adult-sized, handmade bunk beds that are built into the downstairs nook. You can use the heavy curtain to separate the space for privacy. Great for kids, or adults who are kids at heart.

We gladly provide all bed linens and pillows.

Bathrooms:
We have a large full bathroom with an Americast soaking tub and rainhead shower. We provide shower gel, shampoo and towels.

Living room:
We like to spread out on two couches and a plush leather recliner. There are plenty of board games, playing cards, novels, kids books and backlogs of magazines to read. Or hook your phone up to the speakers and play music on the stereo (bluetooth or plug).

Kitchen:
The kitchen is fully equipped with an six person farm table. You’ll have everything you need to cook a holiday meal, bake cupcakes, or just make coffee + toast and use the microwave for simple reheating. The refrigerator is a smaller European model but can hold enough food for a big family. There's also a small dishwasher for easy clean up.

If you need anything we don’t have, we'll do our very best to accommodate. We provide a lot of "starter stuff" so guests don't have to over-buy for short stays (condiments, Olive oil, spices, bug repellent, sunscreen, etc).

A note on Coffee. We love it! So we provide several different ways to make coffee. We have a Bonavita drip machine with a reusable brass filter. Or you can use our stainless steel french press. We provide Starbucks Medium roast coffee, sugar, creamer, stevia, honey. If you bring your own beans, you can use our electric grinder. We provide different kinds of tea because tea is good too.

Entertainment:
The house and property has high speed WiFi access. We installed a Ubiquiti wireless router so the internet reaches to all corners of the yard and around the house. If they even have it, many local rentals have either slow satellite access or limited bandwidth from the cell tower. We made sure to get fast, unlimited broadband. Lounge inside to check your email and catch up on videos, or hang out on the deck while researching cool hikes online. Both flat screens are hooked up to Apple TVs. You can watch unlimited shows and movies on our Netflix account, or sign in to any of your accounts to watch what you want (NFL, NHL, HBO, MLB, iTunes, Hulu, etc).

BBQ:
We have a brand new Weber gas grill with plenty of fuel. Have fun cooking on our hand-laid stone patio. We have foil, wooden skewers, and all the tools you need.

Outdoor Space:
The crowning achievement is the locust hardwood deck on the second floor. With six Adirondack chairs, enjoy the view with a cold drink (bottle openers on the sides). Sunrises and sunsets are priceless. Since we're so far from city lights, you'll have that rare chance for quiet nighttime star gazing.

The yard is fairly steep since the home is on a hill, but there is an area to walk your dog right outside the door for quick relief.

Shenandoah River Outfitters:
One block from our front door is the Shenandoah River Outfitters. Here you can rent tubes, canoes, or kayaks to float down the river. They handle everything including life preservers, floating coolers, and transportation to and from the river. We have their schedule and prices posted in the house. It's an all day adventure.

If you have your own equipment to float, you can drop off at the Bixler's Ferry Bridge and get out at the public boat landing just down from our house. It's a nice 3-4 hour float.

Fishing:
The Shenandoah River offers plenty of spots to fish. There's also a small public lake two minutes from the house. The fish are kept stocked by the Fish and Wildlife department. Great for kids who demand guaranteed bites!

George Washington National Forest:
The forest includes the land across the street from us, but it's a fifteen minute drive to some of the best hiking trails in the area. The Stephens Trail Hike offers panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley along the Massanutten Mountain ridge line, ending at Kennedy's Peak. It's a great, fun hike with lots of chances to see wildlife.

Luray Caverns:
The Caverns are world famous since they were discovered over a century ago. The family who runs the Caverns have done a great job creating an inspiring, tasteful experience. It's a perfect place for an afternoon trip underground. There also plenty of other activities for kids like the giant maze and jungle gym. The Pioneer museum showcases demonstrations on how the first settlers in the area lived.

Shenandoah National Park:
We're twenty miles from the entrance to the Shenandoah National Park. It's a quick drive with no traffic lights between you and the Park. We buy a day or week pass into the park to drive the 110-mile Skyline Drive. Or choose from the approximately 100 day hikes (of varying difficulty) that show off the Park's many waterfalls and vistas. We have booklets describing all the hikes. If you want to get 5 feet away from a deer, you'll be able to. Sometimes it's fun to eat at Skyland on top of the mountain where you can see the all of Page County below.

Weddings:
Luray is known for its beautiful wedding venues. Our house is a perfect home base to stay at when attending your friend's or family's wedding. We're just 13 miles from Khimaira Farm and Faithbrooke. In order to help you look your best, we have a full length mirror, iron and ironing board, and lint rollers.

Small Town USA:
Luray is 10 miles away. It's the a quintessential small American town with a number of restaurants from fancy dining to burger joints. Gathering Grounds is our coffee shop with wifi, and the Main Street bakery makes fresh goodies (ask for Chuck!) Every Saturday morning from May-September, there's a great Farmer's market in town to pick up local produce and meat from area farms. The indoor Willow Grove Farm Market sells locally produced food all year long.

Several pizza places deliver to the Alpine house if you just want to relax and let someone else cook.

Treasure hunt at the antique stores, or grab outdoor gear at the outfitters. The 6-screen movie theater, a true local treasure, is open for matinee and evening screenings. Uncle Bucks is the sports bar where locals enjoy the game (stays open till 1am every night). Several groceries stores and Walmart will provide you with everything you need. There's also the Wisteria winery that's open most days to enjoy a local wine tasting. Hawksbill Brewery recently opened where they make all their own beer. The Luray Zoo is on the edge of town and famous for rescuing exotic animals. Perfect for kids who want to safely get close to animals (like goats and tigers!)

A newly renovated hospital w/ a 24-hour emergency room is close by. We provide a binder with maps of everything in the area and are just a text away if you have questions.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire home. Everything is there for you to use.

Interaction with guests
We'll meet you when you arrive, give you a quick tour, answer any questions, and then the place is yours. We live right down the road if you ever need anything.

Outstanding visit in the Blue Ridge Mountains
I had a wonderful time staying at this lovely mountain getaway. The interior of the remodeled home is fabulous - the wood is beautiful; the space is open but there are also plenty of ways to create a sense of privacy if desired; the kitchen has everything one might need; the wifi and AppleTV set-ups are super friendly; and windows looking to the outside abound. The exterior is even better with an amazing second floor deck that provides beautiful morning and evening views. I took the recommended hike that is close by (Kennedy Peak Trail), and it was definitely worth it. An overall great stay!

Mid Modern did it for us
Ryan and Jay have thought of it all in this Mid Modern century home away from it all. The home was beautiful, and pure delight to relax and get away from it all. Wife and the kids enjoyed the fire pit, and the great amenities of the Apple TV, we are Apple fans. A few things to work on, first I have to say there is a moldy smell or feel coming from the master bedroom. I can not pin point the exact area, I am very sensitive to this and was sneezing every minute I would enter the room. Second, washer and dryer is a must for a long period stay like we did, went to wash clothes at a local place and clothes didn’t come out clean. Last but not least was the fire place, there is no active fire place inside the home. Which my kids look forward to every year for s’mores by the fire. Luckily the fire pit outside was good enough for them. Thanks again for the memories!

We are video documentarians. Since we live in a rural area, we travel often for work. We love staying in neighborhoods rather than stuffy hotels while on these work trips. And we like to cook! So our experience staying in other people's rentals has taught us what we expect to have a comfortable time.
