This hotel was absolutely amazing, mostly due to the incredible staff, particularly Anila, who was just the loveliest and kindest of persons. She and her male colleague (I forgot his name) treated us beautifully, including making sure we had something to eat and coffee before our early departure. They know how to provide excellent customer service. The location of the hotel is the best in Gjirokaster, located right in the center of the old city and close to the old house museums, the castle fortress, and the old bazaar and restaurants. You couldn’t find a more convenient location in Gjirokaster. Finally, we had the King Suite (Room 206), which was magical and made us feel like we were back in time and staying like a Pasha in the best room in the city. This hotel was absolutely superb in every way!

Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.

When in Albania, Gjirokaster should definitely be on your list. The views from the castle are amazing and a visit to the Bazaar for those Instagram pictures is also a must.
But what we enjoyed the most was the travel between Berat and Gjirokaster. Make sure to stop at Tepelene to fill your water bottles with some fresh water and try some deliciously baked fresh trout. Find a small road next to the river, drive in and get yourself wet in the pristine clear water.
The hotel offered a clean, spacious and well finished room, complete with a bathroom that didn't leak anywhere (somewhat unusual considering our stops elsewhere in Albania). The breakfast was substantial and staff were accommodating to get us checked in when we arrived early. The hotel was easy to locate and parking was readily available. The hotel is located a little away from historical Gjirokaster (just over 1km, but it is all up steep hills), but located in a bustling more local area, with lots of bars, restaurants and other nightlife.
Absolutely outstanding stay and great value for money. Clean, comfortable rooms in a quiet location outside of the busiest tourist areas with good breakfast. Maradona and his family were great. They picked me up from the bus station, dropped me back off at the station when I left, and were available to take me (and other guests) to and from downtown, all free of charge. Maradona also helped me figure out the bus schedule to leave Gjirokaster. Dinner at the hotel restaurant is also tasty and very affordable (200 lek per dish).
Excellent hotel with a convenient location just off the main road and close to the center, a cozy air-conditioned room with a balcony and wonderful mountain views. Pleasant and helpful staff, especially the unforgettable Valentina and her most beautiful Albanian smile :) Perfect cleaning, excellent coffee and food in the hotel restaurant. Thank you for the great service. I highly recommend accommodation to everyone! If I wil travel through Gjirokastër sometime in the future, I will definitely use Hotel Qiqi again.
We had a big corner room, nicely decorated with a wooden ceiling and wall paintings.
The whole building felt freshly renovated and was super clean. Shower was so relaxing and of high stNdard
The stuff was very friendly. Breakfast super with eggs/veggis/ cake etc
When you get lost- line we did with google- park at the castle, walk down the stairs and a friendly member of the stuff will navigate you to the hotel
Staying at the pool after a long, exhausting stroll through the steep streets of Gjirokaster was heaven
.
Great location... amazing ambience... the location and the view are amazing... the hotel faces the gjirokaster castle /museum...remember this city was not built for cars so it will test ur driving skills if you are not used to the driving in hills or mountain terrains.. the rooms were very clean and had all the amenities...
The staff were extremely friendly... and polite...
Special thanks to "Matteo" at front desk... extremely professional... goes out of the way to make the guests comfortable...
Without Alexander on front desk this hotel would not rate very highly he was exceptional in every way and went right out of his way to make our stay amazing. We had no fridge or views as advertised but he let us sue the fridge in the breakfast room so kind we could not speak highly enough of his attention to everything he made us feel welcome and special thanks Alexander. The owners are so fortunate to have you on front desk good job, loved the big balcony
The host Maradona was super helpful and picks up and ferries guests about because Gjirokaster is very hilly. If you had to walk or get taxis the hotel would be a bit far out of centre but there is no need to worry at all. The rooms are in a traditional house with an attractive courtyard. The room had a really modern . nice bathroom. It was very peaceful and breakfast was excellent. Gjirokaster is a very attractive place to visit
This place is an absolute gem! Me and my girlfriend spent 4 nights in the resort during spring and there was absolutely nothing to complain about. Amazing staff, such lovely and friendly team of people. Great breakfast, awesome service, comfortable facilities and the restaurant serves very good food which is exactly what you need if you do not feel like searching for a resteurant in Gjirokaster. We loved it and will return!
By far our favourite stay in Albania, a stunning home that feels like a castle in itself. Every detail took you back in time, the whole place is enchanting. We had views over the castle and the whole city of Gjirokastër. We had a homemade breakfast on the terrace, made by the lovely grandmother of the house, who wants nothing but to make sure you are enjoying your stay. HIGHLY recommend booking here.
Lovely little boutique hotel right in central Gjirokaster. We chose not to stay in the old town due to a need for parking, so it was a bit of a hike uphill to the old town, but it's a lovely walk for fit people. The hotel was quiet and very comfortable. Breakfast was served in a private room of their main restaurant/bar and it was delicious and plentiful!
My room wasn't large but it was adequate...Very nice and responsive owner...Large fridge in room...Strong wi-fi...Shower has plenty of high water though it is a little small...Large balcony. The hotel is not in new-town Gjirokaster but it is only a few blocks away. A road right outside the hotel goes to Old Town - about a 3/4 mile walk uphill.
The hotel is beautiful and the location perfect for exploring Gjirokastër. But what surprised us the most are the wonderful people working in the hotel. It was one of the best experiences during our holiday! Thanks again for the lovely surprise the second time we came this week! The Dutch couple:)
This guesthouse is conveniently situated on one of the cobbled streets that lead you straight to the old city center of Gjirokaster. The room is spacious, has a fridge and air conditioning, which is nice to have in Albanian summer. The host was very approachable in spite of the language barrier.
This is the perfect hotel for a weekend getaway in Gjirokaster city. Gorgeous building, and it only gets more breathtaking when you walk in. High quality rooms, and high quality service. The staff at this property are all great! They all go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable.
Everything: cleanliness, design, position (right in the center) and kindness of the Manager (Mr. Martin). Parking spot available near by. We are going to recommend this hotel for a stay in Gjirokastër
The family that runs the hotel are super helpful and nice. The location of the hotel is perfect, next to the bazar and the castle. The breakfast was great, homemade and with traditional food.
Everything, including the breakfast was superb. What a lovely new little hotel . Great to see Albania investing in its hot spots , of which Gjirokaster is certainly one .
