I loved how the bungalow was away from the river and close to the park. Saw wildlife around the bungalow. I didn't like that I had to ride a motorbike without a helmet for the village excursion.

This is a very special place where you are close to nature.

This is a very special place where you are close to nature. The hotel is very relaxed with lovely food and helpful staff. The owner is always on hand. Any questions I had were answered quickly by WhatsApp in advance. They even organised transport to and from the airport for me. My jungle guides were excellent and great fun to be with. They looked after me so well and made my visit to this beautiful and interesting place one that I will always remember.

Being in a remote village in the rain forest is the best experience. Lots of small restaurants family run to choose from. The sound of the river rushing down the valley was fabulous. The locals were all very friendly and said hello and waved.

Bukit Lawang's adjacent Guning Lawang National Park (home to...

Bukit Lawang's adjacent Guning Lawang National Park (home to wild orangutans, elephants, rare tigers and even rarer rhinoceroses) is a SEA tourist hidden gem. The tourist area is compact, facing the tumbling Sungei Bohorok that drains the park and hosts casual river drifts that are entertaining. The highlight for us was a guided trip (we used Sumatra Vibes and they were excellent) into the park to look for wildlife. It's a moderately challenging day even if you're gym-fit (and not recommended for the unfit), but rewarding when you catch a glimpse of orange fur high in the canopy. After minutes of scrutiny, you're rewarded with a curious look from a moon-faced orangautan (or her infant, if you're as fortunate as we were). Less challenging to find were pigtailed macaques. We heard but didn't see hornbills. There are overnight and even multi-day tours that take you deep into the park but we didn't do those. On your arrival day, if you are adventurous you can book a tour to the Bat Cave. It's only 2.5km of pleasant walking from the tourist trip, but the climb down into the cave is for the nimble and fit. Once inside the cave, there are bats, birds, snakes, spiders and plenty of tight spaces to challenge the adventuresome. (Our two adult sons liked it; my wife and I did half the climb down and decided it was too much. We returned to the departure point and waited.) The food is good and cheap, but the real stars are the locals: they are so friendly that they reminded us of Bali in the 1980s before mass tourism ruined the vibe. If you've "done" the rest of the SEA tourist destinations, Bukit Lawang would be #2 on my list after Angkor Wat for the adventurous.

Bukit Lawang is a very great village and I would recommend everyone to visit. It is not only full of very nice friendly families, but also a place to rewind and maybe catch up with some other travellers. Especially the Jungle Trekking and Rafting was a once in the lifetime opportunity. We got a lot of information about the jungle and its economics as well as great entertainment and food. I would love to visit again in future.

The room I stayed in was shocking.

The room I stayed in was shocking. The tiles were cracked, the bathroom was broken and disgusting, not to mention that there is no hot water at all - not out of the taps and not out of the shower. When I complained to reception, their excuse was that it was one of their old rooms. Pathetic and I can't believe they still sell a room like that
