Wonderful room, very friendly owners (husband and wife). We could ask them all questions we had, and they would give us many tips about what to do in the neighborhood. We enjoyed our stay here and the rooms are amazing. Thanks!

Castle Hotel is beautiful and cozy. The family who owns the hotel was super nice, very helpful and we felt at home there. The place is absolutely beautiful and the view as well. We stayed two nights since one day wasn't enough in this lovely city. I highly recommend this hotel and Gjirokastër as well.

Fly to Tirana International Airport, then drive 230km south to Gjirokastër (approx. 4 hours). Alternatively, from within Albania, take a direct bus from Tirana (4-5 hours). No direct water transport available. Transfers may be required for international travellers.
The most convenient airport for Gjirokastër is Tirana International Airport, due to its frequent domestic and international flights. It's approximately 230km away, a manageable journey for travellers.
Gjirokastër, Albania, lacks a public transport system. However, the city is compact and walkable, with most attractions within a 2km radius. Taxis are readily available and affordable for longer distances. Cycling is not recommended due to the city's hilly terrain. Driving is possible, but be aware of narrow, winding roads.
The Old Town of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the best area to stay. It offers easy access to historic attractions like Gjirokastër Castle and Skenduli House, and a variety of local restaurants and shops.
Gjirokastër, Albania experiences a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool, wet winters. Average temperatures range from 6°C in January to 25°C in July. The city has distinct summer and winter seasons, with the warmest months from June to August and the coldest from December to February. Rainfall is highest in November and December, making late autumn and early winter the wettest period.

Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.

When in Albania, Gjirokaster should definitely be on your list. The views from the castle are amazing and a visit to the Bazaar for those Instagram pictures is also a must.
But what we enjoyed the most was the travel between Berat and Gjirokaster. Make sure to stop at Tepelene to fill your water bottles with some fresh water and try some deliciously baked fresh trout. Find a small road next to the river, drive in and get yourself wet in the pristine clear water.
Beautiful hotel with traditional exterior façades located within a very short walk of castle and bazaar. Attentive service. Comfortable room, good shower, excellent breakfast with eggs made to order. Front desk, bar area staff helpful and gave excellent restaurant recommendation that was not in the usual listings. Parking on site but a bit crowded at times. 5G or 4G broadband throughout hotel. The superior room is very spacious. The hotel is quiet except the bar area where there is low volume and pleasant popular music.
We had a big corner room, nicely decorated with a wooden ceiling and wall paintings.
The whole building felt freshly renovated and was super clean. Shower was so relaxing and of high stNdard
The stuff was very friendly. Breakfast super with eggs/veggis/ cake etc
When you get lost- line we did with google- park at the castle, walk down the stairs and a friendly member of the stuff will navigate you to the hotel
Staying at the pool after a long, exhausting stroll through the steep streets of Gjirokaster was heaven
English: The place was very clean and well kept. The host was so nice and a great. They helped us with our luggage and fed us fruit after our long drive to Gjirokaster. I would reccomend this pace to everyone.
Këtë ritëm do ua rekomandoja të gjithëve.
The location is superb. The hotel is right in the center of Gjirokaster at the Bazaar with a terrace offering a wonderful view over the city
The owning family is friendly, welcoming and helpful. They were always there for us and offered a great service.
The breakfast was tasty and plentiful, offering a range of different local foods.
The rooms were clean, with a good A/C and came with some complementary water.
By far our favourite stay in Albania, a stunning home that feels like a castle in itself. Every detail took you back in time, the whole place is enchanting. We had views over the castle and the whole city of Gjirokastër. We had a homemade breakfast on the terrace, made by the lovely grandmother of the house, who wants nothing but to make sure you are enjoying your stay. HIGHLY recommend booking here.
One of the best rooms we have ever booked! We liked it so much!! Very clean and beautiful room, perfect location (near to the center). The owners very friendly and the did the best for us. We ate also dinner in the hotel's restaurant and we ate delicious and traditional albanian food!! The breakfast was full!! Our room (double deluxe) had perfect view and was perfect decorated! 🥰
The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, breakfast was lovely, and owner was incredible – the hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the old town center, and so he offered rides in and out of town at the drop of a hat. All I had to do was call or message him and he'd pick me up within 5-10 minutes. Amazing service and definitely recommend for anyone visiting Gjirokaster.
I was very warmly welcomed by the staff and the owners. They were so helpful. The location of the hotel is on a main road before the roundabout. To the historical centre of Gjirokaster it is about 15 minutes walk. The room was clean and air-conditioned. Safe parking lot is behind the hotel. Thank you very much for 3 nights with good breakfast! I have to come again !
Everything. Gorgeous room- worth splashing out for a balcony. The hotel staff apologised that the balcony was 'small' but it was amazing and roomy enough for two persons with a magnificent view of the mountains AND Gjirokaster castle. Room itself felt like a posh Ottoman house. Breakfast was 5-star, so much food and all so good!! Staff very attentive and helpful.
Very beautiful little hotel in the best part of Gjirokastër, near everything. The owner is very kind and does everything só you can feel home. The breakfast was delicious and the room that we stayed has AN AMAZING view to the fortress - try to get this room, my recommendation. He can also try to find privat tour to the Blue eyes.
Lovely couple that ran the hotel. They upgraded us to a bigger room free of charge. The room itself was lovely. Very comfy beds!
The hotel is situated an easy walk for most of the things you would want to see in Gjirokaster and was just across the road from the Ethnographic museum.
The breakfast was absolutely lovely!
Our stay with Tatiana was a highlight of our trip to Gjirokaster. Her warm welcome made us feel at home straight away.
This beautiful hotel is very central and fits in as a historic building. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean.
Don't miss out on the wonderful breakfast. It was a delicious treat!
This guesthouse is conveniently situated on one of the cobbled streets that lead you straight to the old city center of Gjirokaster. The room is spacious, has a fridge and air conditioning, which is nice to have in Albanian summer. The host was very approachable in spite of the language barrier.
I stayed for 2 nights in hotel Gjirokastra and had a pleasant experience as the hotel is perfectly located in the city centre of this lovely town Gjirokaster. Room was really clean and comfortable. Was good to have a nice room after having stayed at more simple guesthouses. Highly recommended!
We stayed in the delux suite and it might be the best place we stayed during our whole southern Albania trip. It was decorated and laid out just like a classic Gjirokaster home. absolutely gorgeous. the breakfast was fantastic and the location was very convenient to the bazaar and the church.
Excellent place, amazing location. The hotel has a mix of decorations of traditional and modern. I would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Gjirokaster. The owner and the staff were amazing, very helpful, and welcoming. The food was delicious and fresh. So, defently 10 out of 10
Fantastic stay, very welcoming staff. Husband and wife team. Wonderful, new parking lot to leave a vehicle. Did our laundry for us. Awesome balcony view of Gjirokastër and the castle atop the city. New, clean and affordable. Pleasant stay with Miri the man. Highly recommend
Everything: cleanliness, design, position (right in the center) and kindness of the Manager (Mr. Martin). Parking spot available near by. We are going to recommend this hotel for a stay in Gjirokastër
