We loved this place, location is perfect close to the tortuguero national park and quiet at the same time. The hotel is awesome and the guys who work there are really informative and professional.
We also had a chance to see a monkey right on the tree in front of our room.
Really recommended

Great location. Very close to the beach and national park. Short walk to town. Hammocks to rest in outside. Quiet at night. I could hear the sound of the waves. Ask for a map of the town because at first it’s a little confusing. I think mostly locals stay here. No AC but it wasn’t needed. My room had 3 beds and a fan for each bed. The proprietor used an app to translate his Spanish into English for me. I was very pleased with this place.

El trato del personal.
Las excursiones.
La comida.
The town is ok - plenty of eateries. The accommodation at Cabinas Sports Fishing was wonderful! The early morning boat trip was very enjoyable, as was the Jaguar trail in the National Park. The Budda Cafe has a nice vibe and good food. We were there in April so missed the turtle nesting season but still very much worth a visit!

What a gem.
What a gem. We had three nights here but in hindsight could have done two (a lot of people just do one). Two nights gives you a chance to soak up the atmosphere and explore the village from end to end.
It was an experience getting there - a 1hr boat trip (which can be longer depending on the water levels). On arrival we were surprised at the number of bars and restaurants - a huge variety. Many on the waterfront and how wonderful to have no cars. Our hotel met us at the wharf and transferred our luggage.
The hotels are right amongst the locals houses - so you really get to know the village and can hear all the 'goings on'. Just walking around you see the houses, some of the challenges living there, the flora and fauna.
We did a motor boat tour at 9am - would recommend doing this at 6am as the forest wakes up. Its amazing on the water - seeking the birds close up, camen, monkeys and iguanas. You will see more animals on a tour of the forest but its still worth the experience.
The motor boat tour includes national park entry - but I would recommend using a guide in the park as despite what you think its really hard to spot animals without the 'experienced eye'; and of course its their livelihood. I also did a night tour - there were a lot of other night tours - we walked along the route to the airport so it didn't feel super secluded - but we did see an armadillo, spiders, a snake, sloth and an iguana. Just goes to show nature is all around us - but again I would never have seen it without the experienced guide.
Overall its quite an experience and would suggest Tortuguera is a 'must have' on a Costa Rica itinerary.

Loved the fact that the boat dropped us off at the hotel's dock and picked us up here as well. Checkin was a breeze but make sure you have the cash to pay for the room and any tours. Canoe/boat tours, day hikes, night walks were arranged by the hotel in advance for very nominal rates. The tours start right at the hotel and hence very convenient.
The hotel sits on the banks of the river and the views are lovely especially during dusk and dawn. We experienced torrential rain one afternoon and during the night. The rain in the afternoon did not last long. The canals are accessible by boat, canoe and kayaks. Tortuguero is laid back and a nice place to wind down and experience time float by.
Great place to see Great Green Macaws fly by during dawn and dusk. We also saw the last of the turtle hatchings make their way to the sea. Wonderful sight to experience. The town and beach are easily accessible. The canals are teeming in wildlife. We saw green basilisks, iguanas, jacanas, toucans, caimans, herons and monkeys (howler, spider and capuchin). On the night walk we saw frogs (Savage's bullfrog, red-eyed tree frog, some snakes, and a sloth at close range.
The hotel staff were nice. The free breakfast was an added bonus. Laundry service was available for a fee. The town was easily accessible by foot. Local food at the sodas was fulfilling. Overall a wonderful experience!

It was like going to the Amazon River and experiencing wildlife and diversity. It was a multi cultural place with a taste of how locals villagers live , ocean access, river access and the best part is watching conservation of turtles. Turtle night tour is a must do!!?

Town was better than pictured. Walking to everything is easy. Favorite restaurants were Miss Miriams next to the football field and Budda Cafe overlooking the river. Went on three turtle tours and the canoe tour. All great. Used Tuanis Tours for 2 turtle and canoe and Leonardo for private turtle tour. Grocery store carries beer and liquor at reasonable prices.

The Tortuguero area is considerably different from the rest...
The Tortuguero area is considerably different from the rest of Costa Rica. Isolated from land transport, all access is done either by boat or plane. Opt for the boat if you can. It's cheap (around 8000 colones round trip from La Pavona), and despite being on a public transport you'll have a tour experience. The trip can take up to 1,5 hours, with safety conditions guarateed (life vests) and you'll be winding through the florest canals until you reach the Tortuguero sandbar. much like running down the Amazonas, The village is very small but with a great ambient of friendly people (general fact in all CR) with plenty of options for food/drinks, accomodations. Tortuguero life runs around sightseeing (National Park, turtle tours, and cannoeing in the canals). At night you'll have plenty of options for sunset and dinning. You're in a protected area for marine turtles and the mindset is all around that. Forget about bathing in the river or the beach, as one it's inhabited by crocodiles and the other with bull sharks,
The hotel is located on the beach and just far enough off the main street to be quiet. Due to COVID, the hotel restaurant and bar were not open to the public, but they did still serve an amazing breakfast to their guests. Rooms were small, but comfortable and we had one with A/C. The sound of the waves and the access to the beach were perfect. The family there was so nice and Alex was very accommodating and helpful in assisting us with finding a guide for the Tortuguero National Park. Also LOVED the gardens.
Free Breakfasts at the adjoining Hotel Los Amigos were very good. The pool area was clean and attractive. Staff was kind and helpful. Someone met us promptly at the boat from La Pavona and had a cart ready for our luggage to the hotel. The instructions delivered by email through booking.com about arrival and the boat trip were very clear and helpful, NICE!. Made us feel safe and comforted by the Carey Hotel level of detail on the canal trip in.
Highlights:
The staff.
The accommodation - Price vs location is insanely off balance, as:
- It is a huge accommodation vs the price
- That is located in the heart of Tortuguero's main town.
- The National park is about 5 minutes walk away.
- It has its own dock for arrival and departure.
- It has (what is in my opinion) the best restaurant in Tortuguero attached to the property.
The location is fantastic! Wildlife galore! The setting is very tropical feeling and very in tune with nature. Going out onto the canal or out onto the beach just takes a minute. The town is just a short walk down a path alongside the beach, and there are plenty of restaurants, a grocery store for snacks and a national park you can walk thru for a chance (slight as it might be) to see a jaguar.
Casa Marbella is a really nice place to stay in Tortuguero, calm and right on the main road of the town, with a terrace towards the river overseeing the entry to the national park. The breakfast was good. The Staff is very welcoming and helping to make our stay very much enjoyable. Also the tours we booked with Marbella were really nice and we enjoyed it. We would stay here again.
Very nice and clean room, especially the bathroom. The best shower we had in over two weeks in Costa Rica! Unfortunately, a mirror was missing in the room (since the rooms are very new, maybe that's the reason).
The staff is very helpful and friendly, especially Carmen from the reception. She is super helpful and also took care of personal matter. She was always very supportive.
Very nice accommodating family. Breakfast was great and they gave us a tour of their farm with bananas, lemon, cocoa and other fruit trees. The little house was stayed in was very clean and comfortable. A great open air experience. Very close to La Pavona where we departed for La Tortuguero after checking out. They accepted PayPal which was great. We saw a sloth and monkeys.
The breakfast buffet was really nice and versatile. The premises including the beach were clean and in a good condition. Wildlife was never far. :) Iguanas climbed the trees and parrots were everywhere. We found a jaguar's footprints about a mile away from the hotel beach. :D Well, the national park is close.
The members of staff were nice and always helpful.
Clean room in an ecofriendly hostel with very friendly staff.
The receptionist walks you trough the little village to the office and gives you some nice tips about the restaurants and shops.
The hotel also offers excursions and activities. We were very pleased with the electric boat tour on the Tortuguero NP canals with Celimo as our guide.
I was very unsure about the location initially as it is a river bus or taxi ride out of Tortuguero town (as at January 2023, river bus ‘periferica’ $2 pp, taxi-boat $15), but in the end I was happy with my choice. It was wonderfully quiet with beautiful gardens and a great place to relax between canal trips and walking in the national park.
Such lovely staff, kind, attentive and knowledgable. Tortuguero is an amazing location - the hotel itself is so close to nature. and the all inclusive set up worked well. food was plentiful and good. Luis our guide was a legend! This will be a treasured memory and we can recommend it as one of the most amazing experiences.
- the location was 10m next to the beautiful beach. We could hear the waves which was super nice. The hotel was also close to the center and the deck.
- staff is nice and helpful for the activities that we could do in Tortuguero.
- the room was super clean and decorated with taste.
Nice common kitchen. Nice small pool . Close to village and beach. Very helpful staff. Guide met us at La Pavona parking, made sure we got our boat tickets, made sure we got on the correct boat, walked us to the hotel, helped us with tours. Everything was great
Everything was perfect. It was the best accomodation where we stayed in our roundtrip in Costa Rica. I will definitely recommend to stay in this hostel. It was for us very relaxong and comfortable time at the hostel and Tortuguero.
I HIGHLY recommend the all inclusive Tortugero package through Laguna Lodge. They pick you up in San Jose and baby you through a wonderful rainforest experience. Beautiful hotel, good food and bar. Cool excursions. We loved it
Near the beach but the ocean at Tortuguero is not really good for swimming. Danger warning signs in some places. Near the national park and tour companies offering day and night tours.
The beach is in from of the Hotel but it is quite dangerous, anyway We enjoy it!!! The breakfast was really good. You can go walking everywhere. Beautiful island.
